You may (or may not) have been wondering where the BCS Buster Power Rankings were last week. Let’s just say my life was as disheveled as the BCS Buster landscape as the new week began, and both needed a few days to settle out. So we’re picking up this year’s first regular-season installment after the second week, after teams have had time to shake out the cobwebs and there is enough data to start honestly comparing the contenders... This will be the third year that we’ve followed the trials and tribulations of teams outside the power structure trying to burst through onto the big stage. It might very well also be the penultimate opportunity we have to track them, at least in the terms that have been dictated over the past decade by the Bowl Championship Series. But a Buster by any name will be just as sweet, no matter what the future landscape of the college football postseason... Read More

The first BCS standings of the 2011 season were released Sunday after the seventh week of games has completed and every team has passed the halfway point of their schedules. Nothing too shocking showed up in the standings… six Big Ten teams, five SEC schools, and five Big XII squads headlined the standings, dominating the Top 25 as the usual suspects start jockeying for position in hopes of landing one of the ten most lucrative bowl berths... The weekly Power Rankings have expanded this week to include teams that probably have absolutely no chance at the BCS… but definitely include some that should, even with a loss. Just fifteen undefeated teams remain out of the ten dozen that comprise the top division of college football, and with that number due to dwindle throughout the season as conference battles take their toll it isn’t unthinkable that we have a season like 2007 where... The first games are in the books, and for those teams that survived the tough tests of the opening weekend there are just eleven more hurdles left to clear on the road toward becoming a BCS Buster. Several teams lost their best chance to emerge on the radar… and as we all know, even one defeat is the bane of a BCS Buster’s existence.
Therein lies the difference for non-AQ schools and all others. Take the fortunes of the two teams expected... Read More
